It is been almost two years since I stopped sitting continually during work in my home office and moved to a standing desk. This was the catalyst for my move towards a more healthy lifestyle. Since then I have learned so much about not only myself, but also about what it takes for me to lose weight, eat properly, and continue to move.

I was also introduced to Katy Bowman during this time. She is a biomechanist who studies movement and how your body reacts to human movement. Her books that I have reviewed I have been nothing short of amazing; filled with insight and depth of understanding of the body, and the ability to communicate that to her readers.

Today, I have another awesome read of hers that I am pleased to share with you. Is a great insight into how human movement connects to the planet and all things around us.

What if we can make ourselves, our communities, and our planet healthier all at the same time by moving our bodies more?

Movement Matters is a collection of essays in which biomechanist Katy Bowman continues her groundbreaking investigation of the mechanics of our sedentary culture and the profound potential of human movement. Here she widens her “You are how you move” message and invites us to consider our personal relationship with sedentarism, privilege, and nature. Bowman explores:

* how convenience often means less movement, not more time

* the missing movement nutrients in our food

* how to include more nature in education

* the impact of adding movement to permaculture and ecological models

* our need for vitamin Community and group movement

Unapologetically direct, often hilarious, and always compassionate, Movement Matters demonstrates that human movement is powerful and important, and that living a movement-filled life is perhaps the most joyful and efficient way to transform your body, community, and world.

Thoughts about Movement Matters by Katy Bowman

The way Katy Bowman looks at life in general is completely different than what you and I may see things. As a scientist, she processes knowledge differently and looks at things in a more dissected manner. It is because of this view she is able to explain movement, along with the causes of ill movement or lack of movement, to a novice in an understandable manner.

Her look at movement in the world surrounding it really compels you to think about how you exist in the world itself. With looks into eating pattern over the years and how it’s changed, plus a great thought process on how our food can be stacked, such as it was by our ancestors, offers insight and reason to rethink how and what you eat.

Her thoughts about the food process is quite ingenious and really makes you think about our nutrients and how to use movement and food to supplement everything that we may be missing for our overall health.

She also talks about stacking your life and looking at time-saving activities in a different way. She offers thoughts and methods to try rearranging your life structure to be more efficient.

These are just a few thoughts that she shares in the multiple essays included in this book. It’s a fascinating look into our lives today and it will reinforce the what you think you know about about movement and why it is so critical for health, both mentally and physically.

For anyone who is concerned about the lack of movement in their life, hand them this book and let the author convince you that no matter your physical capabilities, you just have to move for a more fulfilling and healthy life.

  1. Thank you for sharing this with us. I’m a Myofascial Therapist, LMT in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and would like to learn more. I feel like this might be the missing link I’ve been looking for since I’m seeing that when clients integrate some type of daily stretching or movement (as long as its not aggressive) they benefit immensely.

    1. All of Katy’s books offer amazing insight to the body and she teaches us how movement can have profound change in our lives. Definitely check her work out on her website and books.
