Why Water Workouts Are Best for Older Adults

Why Water Workouts Are Best for Older Adults - A Midlife Wife

I’ve always been a water baby. I’m happiest when I am near a body of water. Growing up I spent years living on the lake. When I need to decompress I had for the ocean. And now when I need to exercise and get my body moving again, I head into my pool.

My pool and I have a love-hate relationship. For the most part I love having a pool. I spent many hours in the pool with my child as he was growing up. Then there was a break for many years and I would only use it every so often during the year.

Now that I am working diligently to get back in shape or at least get more energy and build muscles, I find my pool is a must.

Over the winter and the spring I lost control of it and it was un-usable for several months. I really could tell how out of shape I was getting again and frustration really set in. No movement on the scale except for up! Even my legs were getting weaker. UGH!

But finally a few weeks ago I was able to re-open my pool and dive in. From my very first workout it just felt like heaven.

The best part about doing your workout in the water is the resistance you get from the water itself. It works your body in amazing ways and you can get in a full workout in just 15 to 30 minutes.

Working out in the water allows you to move your body in ways you rarely can on land. Squats, jumps, treading water, running, mountain climbers, and more. And all with less risk of injury to yourself, as long as we don’t go overboard.

I truly am addicted to working out in the water. I have done three workouts this weekend and I can already feel the difference in my legs, abs, and butt.

I have a sequence of exercises I do in the pool and I have to admit I do a much longer work out then other people may. I start at 60 minutes and head to 90 minutes. All of this is active movement running cardio and stretching.

I feel so much better and even though my muscles are somewhat exhausted when I get out, I feel no pain ever. I truly believe that water aerobics and workouts are the best for middle-age to senior age adults without fear of injury.

Where to Workout

If you are middle aged and older, check with your local gyms for a pool. Community centers are also a good bet. My local college allows open swims several times a day. Even some physical therapy locations offer pool access to residents for workouts.

There are organized classes available or you can search great exercises to do in the pool to rev up your body!

I believe we have to do everything we can to stay mobile and active until the day we die. My goal is to figure out how to get solar panels to run my heater so I can use it year-round. Maybe then I will make it to the shape I want to be in.
