Yarnology Ergonomic Crochet Hooks for the Win

I have shared with you some updates on the blanket I have been crocheting and working on for the past month or so.

I have been on a break from work for the past three weeks so I have really put a dent into it. I am hoping to get it completed within the next few weeks. I have a few rows left and the border to do. I am excited!!

Before Christmas, I was noticing that my fingers go a bit numb after I work on it for an hour or so. I have always used either the Susan Bates hooks or Boye hooks with never an issue. Maybe it is due to the fact I am getting older, or due to the stitch, I am working my fingers and wrist much more than normal.

Regardless, I thought I would try some ergonomic hooks to see if they would help. I was going to get the Susan Bates complete set I saw online at Joanns, but never found it in the store. So when I was in Hobby Lobby, I saw the Yarnology hooks.

One thing I did notice is that there are so many different styles. You really have to think about how you hold your hook before buying a set. The ones I chose are a comfort grip and the grip comes pretty far up the metal staff. I hold my hook right on the flat groove made for the thumb.

Some ergonomic ones are thicker at the bottom but are not the soft comfort grips where you place your thumb. Maybe they are for arthritic hands that cannot grasp as well.

Not positive about my choice, I did go ahead and get the three sizes I use the most. There are sets available that were carried at my store but not in this style.

My Thoughts on this hook are remarkable.

  • No more numbing of the fingers
  • No getting caught on the yarn
  • Smooth and easy to use

I admit it did take me a bit to get used to it. I slowed down quite a bit to get the flow and feeling for this new hook. The metal shaft is a bit thicker than the Boye hook I was using, but it actually helped open the stitches for me which resulted in less catching and splitting of the yarn. Huge plus!

I am definitely sold on this style of ergonomic hook for me. Plus, the price is pretty good, I think. I will add more to my collection as I need them, but for now, I think these three should hold me – at least until the next big project!

Have you used an ergonomic crochet hook and if so, which is your favorite? Do they help your hands?
