A couple of months ago I shared with you about my dogs and their overall health. I started getting concerned with their weight and other issues and began cooking for my dogs probably four or five years ago.

My pittie, Louis, was overweight and was developing a lot of difficulties because of poor nutrition. He was developing skin issues and a whole host of problems.

So I switched him to grain-free kibble and started cooking fresh meat for him. He improved remarkably, lost almost 20 pounds along the way, and lived a long, healthy life

Since then I’ve had two other dogs join my household and I’m continuing to cook for my dogs. But I am seeing issues which I am trying to address.

Right now I have a lab who has been itching and chewing her feet intensely over the past year I’ve had her. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to do some research about her high anxiety and chewing issues.

What I found out is that veggies can have a huge impact on skin issues. So I decided to do an experiment and change up their dog food that I make for them.

I’m keeping it as bland as possible to work on some sort of an elimination type diet for them. Since my main recipes had included some frozen veggies cooked in the juice or broth of the meat, I am experimenting by removing all veggies.

I’m basically making turkey or chicken and then adding in eggs right now. Eggs are extremely good for their body, their coat, and overall nutrition, along with the meat. I have also reduced the amount of kibble and increased the amount of meat and eggs.

I’m waiting to see if the removal of the veggies is going to help calm down her system somewhat. While it’s only been about a week or two, my Lab is scratching and chewing on her feet much less. I’m hoping that this trend will continue.

Last resort, I will be switching out their kibble to see if that could be causing the issue as well.

Have you had any issues with your dog’s food? As humans we have issues with additives and things in our diet so I know the dogs can be affected as well.
