Other People’s Houses by Clare Mackintosh: Review

cover for Other People's Houses by Clare Mackintosh

I discovered this author in 2017 with a gripping and different style of thriller murder mystery that captured my attention! I have read several of her books since, with this upcoming release being the fifth.

This book is a blend of police procedure and murder mystery set in Wales. Following a police detective through a series of three books. You do not have to read them in order, but it would help get the full impact!

The Hill is the kind of place everyone wants to live: luxurious, exclusive and safe. But now someone is breaking and entering these Cheshire homes one by one, and DS Leo Brady suspects the burglar is looking for something, or someone, in particular.

Over the border in Wales, DC Ffion Morgan recovers the body of an estate agent from the lake. There’s no love lost between Ffion and estate agents, but who hated this one enough to want her dead – and why?

As their cases collide, Ffion and Leo discover people will pay a high price to keep their secrets behind closed doors . . .

Other People’s Houses by Clare Mackintosh Review

One of the things that hits right with this author is that she builds a main character who is tough but vulnerable too. We see her weaknesses and get to cheer her on as her love interest grows. I think this story is one where she only gets in trouble from her boss one time! lol

Smartly written with two separate crimes that start combining into one, we get to follow both Ffion and Leo as they do what they do best through the intense pressures and the race against the clock.

Mackintosh’s books are mainly set in Wales, and in Other People’s Houses, the build-up and pacing are spot on. She delivers an awesome murder mystery tangle with a fabulous ending!

One issue in this one is the number of suspects. I did get lost a few times in the round-up of who is who. However, Mackintosh kills it in all other aspects.

This is an author who consistently delivers the suspense and weaves a web that will keep you guessing to the end!

4 STARS!!
