Into the Fire by Gregg Hurwitz: Review

Into the Fire - Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz

I was asked to review a book this week from an author I have heard of but had never had the pleasure of reading before. He writes in the genre that I love, black ops and espionage, and this book was an amazing story from the start.

Even though this is book 5 of the series, I know I have to go back and read the other stories. Read on for my review.

Into the Fire - Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz

Synopsis:
Evan Smoak lives by his own code.

Once he was known as Orphan X. Trained as an off-the-books government assassin and spoken about only in whispers, Evan Smoak was one of the most talented – and most feared – men in the Program. But he broke free and reinvented himself as The Nowhere Man, a figure shrouded in mystery, known for helping the truly desperate.

If anyone is truly desperate, it’s Max Merriweather.

Max is at the end of his rope. His cousin has been brutally murdered, leaving Max an envelope that contains nothing but a mysterious key. However, someone really wants that key, badly enough that Max – and anyone he turns to – is in deadly danger. What seems like a simple job for The Nowhere Man turns out to be anything but. Behind every threat he takes out, a deadlier one emerges and Evan Smoak must put himself in greater danger than ever before as he heads once more Into The Fire.

Into the Fire by Gregg Hurwitz Review

I have to say I absolutely love this book. Not only because it is one of my favorite genres, but Into the Fire is a completely unique type of story that you don’t often find.

Sometimes when you read black ops espionage type stories they are so packed with action that you can barely breathe. Your heart starts pounding and you are wound up throughout the entire book. The story is so intense you have to read it as fast as possible in case you miss something.

This book, however, had plenty of action but it wasn’t at the type of pace that almost exhausts you. All of the characters are richly enhancing to the story. Hurwitz crafts them with precise, amazing skills and knowledge beyond belief. The detail and description is beyond the typical.

The fact that Evan, the main character, works at protecting others makes the story even more special. This is no run of the mill agent, or past agent, in this case. He is a loner and you have to feel for this guy. His skills are over the top. He is a broken man.

Hurwitz seriously created a damn good story that is loaded with suspense and death defying action which will completely engross you throughout the book. The intricate research done before writing the scenes is evident. Unbelievable and shocking in places. But one you cannot stop reading.

I have never read this series before. Yes, I am sure I have missed some key points with all of the other awesome characters who brought out Evan’s dry humor, sensitivity, big heart, and dare I say, even whispers of love. Oh, I wish I had started with book one. However, I still can go back to the beginning and really get to know Evan, et al. I cannot wait!!!

Hurwitz is an author that has quickly moved to the top of my list!!

5 STARS!
