How to Make Orange and Clove Pomanders

I love the smell of cloves for the holiday season. It just really makes it seem like Christmas. All Christmasy smell of cloves, nutmeg, orange, and cinnamon makes me homesick for my mom.

So this year I thought I would make pomanders with fresh navel oranges and cloves. These are so simple to make and just make your entire room smell amazing.

They’re super simple to make and can be done any time of year! Just purchase the oranges and get whole cloves. The cloves have a pointy end that you can just press right into the orange peel. I think a thimble would be very helpful because your thumb will get sore. Another option is to use a  toothpick to slightly pierce the orange peel.

You can make whatever design you choose as you are inserting the cloves. I did a few verticals, did a few spirals and a few random designs.  I’ve seen people make stars and swirls, whatever comes to you.

Then let them dry out, turning daily. You can also roll these in spices (here’s a simple recipe) which will help coat the orange and assist with the drying factor. It takes two to four weeks for them to completely dry. You can also put them in a very low heat oven about 225 for 4-5 hours, if you are in a hurry.

But the scent while they’re drying is what’s amazing. You can use them for decorations on the tree, and a festive bowl for your table, as gifts, and many more ideas. Even slicing them to include in other decorations like wreaths.

Enjoy the scent of the holidays with these easy to make orange and clove pomanders.
