Exploring the SouthWest US

Exploring the SouthWest US

I shared with you a few of my pics from my home in Minnesota last week. This week we are heading home via the southwestern states.

We stopped to visit family in Oklahoma for a few days and today we traveled through Texas and into New Mexico. I have a few fun pictures to share with you.

But first, for those John Wayne fans, if you are traveling through Iowa on I35, you may want to check out his birthplace in Winterset.

The town is a sweet small town USA place you would expect in the middle of no where. The downtown is quaint with a mixture of old and new business and homes. The biggest hanging flower pots line the downtown area bursting with blooms. Plus, they have a great museum dedicated to their most famous person.

We headed towards Texas and ended up in Albuquerque over night. Just east of Amarillo in a tiny town called Groom, Tx. is one of my favorite stops I have to make. It is called The Cross at Groom TX and it is stunning. I thought I have shared some of it with you before but looking back I have not. I will have to make a post about it for you once I get home.

It is a giant cross and dedicated area with bronze figures that tell the story of Jesus. You simply must see it. Here are a few pictures of the interior that houses the store, theater, and counselors. Love this place! It is so serene.

Finally tonight we explored Albuquerque for a bit and ate at an original diner downtown on Route 66. This used to be a Phillips 66 Gas Station and was converted in 1987 to a traditional style diner. Great atmosphere and a fun place to eat.

Tomorrow, off to the Grand Canyon and other sites along the way.

Where have you traveled to this summer?
