I don’t think there’s anyone out there that doesn’t enjoy sugar of some sort. Whether it’s in those sweet treats we love or flavored creamers for coffee or even that occasional glass of sweet tea, sugar is in so many of our food and beverages it can sometimes be hard to remove from our diet.
Because I eat low-carb, sugar is a little easier to stay away from. Not to say that it’s not buried in a lot of the foods, but I don’t really have a sweet tooth, other than chocolate every once in while. LOL
The one thing that I do enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning. The problem with that is I love it with cream and sugar. It’s just tastes so right. But I know how addicting sugar can be so I’ve been looking for other alternatives to sugar, specifically alternatives without the chemical changes to a product, such as Sweet and Low or Splenda.
I’ve heard a lot about agave nectar and when I saw this Agave in the Raw I thought I would do a little research and give it a try. This product is vegan and gluten-free, of course. But it also says that it is a low glycemic index. That interests me.
This product has about 20 cal per teaspoon and it is a bit sweeter than sugar so you can use less. It’s supposedly will not cause a spike in blood sugar when you use it, but there are other issues like reduction in metabolism could occur.
I have also used raw sugar for many years. I like that because it has not been chemically processed or altered in anyway. I found a brand from Mexico that I use most of the time. But I’m also looking into coconut palm sugar. That is supposedly low on the glycemic index is well, but I haven’t tried it yet.
So while the taste of the agave is pretty decent, I’m still continuing the search for the perfect sweetener for me. My body does not process liquid sugar well. I get a sugar high! lol Finding alternatives to sugar that are not chemically processed is difficult. So for now I’m sticking to my raw sugar and finish this agave so I don’t have to give up my coffee. But, that make be next!
Let me know if you have tried agave and your thoughts on refined sugar alternatives.
