I would not call myself a sugar fanatic. I could take it or leave it for the most part. However there are certain things that I truly enjoy are sweet. My coffee in the morning. Ice cream now and then. And every once in a great while a piece of dessert or candy, specifically chocolate.
But sugar is most addictive part of our diets and I know it also does a lot of weird things to my body. So I’ve been trying to eliminate sugar in my diet.
Since I really do enjoy a cup of coffee, I wanted to find a sugar substitute that would not raise my blood sugar level. I shared with you before the issues with agave and “liquid sugar“. So I thought I would try Stevia organic sweetener which would be the closest product that replicated sugar and it’s also approved for those on keto diet’s.
So I went to the grocery store and I found a stevia sweetener called Zing Organic. I tried it for a week or two and actually hated it. I could taste like a metallic or chemical aftertaste and it really made my coffee taste gross. But I continued to use it because I wanted to do better for my body.
My husband was with me when we were shopping the next time and I was telling him about the stevia issue. The store we were at offered a different brand called Wholesome. So I was reading the ingredients and read off that it contained erythritol. He has been following a health site that recommended Stevia with the erythritol. So I thought I would try it.
I was very surprised the taste was completely different from the other. So I thought I would compare the two for you and share my findings.
The Difference in Stevia Products: Comparison and Taste Test
The Zing product uses dextrose to enhance the stevia. Dextrose is actually a sugar made from corn. So why would I want sugar that has been chemically changed along with the stevia? So that made sense with the chemical taste I was getting. Plus it was a very fine powder, which I found was interesting.
The Wholesome stevia product contains erythritol which is a sugar alcohol. This Ii usually stay away from because it can affect your blood sugar. However, it is in such a small quantity that it will not affect your blood glucose or glycemic levels. This makes it safe for diabetics to use too. This product is more in a crystal form and there is much less to each packet.
The best part about this product is the taste is so much better than the other product. The Wholesome brand is a better value too.
While I do still prefer sugar in it’s natural form, I can live with the Stevia made by Wholesome. You have to give up something to get something so that’s what I’ll do.
