It’s January and we know it’s darn cold outside. It makes it tough to get outside and do the things we’re supposed to be doing. Even running errands can be a chore, let alone exercising.

But there are some good things about getting out in the cold weather that we may not think about. Working out in the colder weather is really an opportunity to work on areas of the body you may not want to work so hard in the heat of the summer.

The first thing that comes to mind is cardio. I know I hate walking and exercising hard in the summer because of the extreme heat.

But in the winter we want to be able to work harder so that we stay warm. What a perfect opportunity to really exercise our heart and build strength.

Another great thing about working out in the cold weather is we’re able to actually burn more calories because our body tries to regulate its own temperature. That is a huge plus.

One thing to think about is to make sure we warm up before heading out in that cold air. Even if you’re going out to shovel the snow, take a few minutes to do some stretches, squats, or even doing miniature push-ups off the kitchen counter to keep that core activated and strong.

The last thing we want to do is to get hurt. Staying active, warming up before any exercise, and embracing the cold weather can really help.
