The weather during winter is a fickle creature. One day it is nice and tolerable with a warm sun and the next day it is freezing with crazy winds. No matter the weather, exercising outdoors in the cold weather can be difficult sometimes. However, knowing how to dress properly can help you be comfortable no matter hat the cold winter weather can throw your way.
Here are some tips for exercising in the cold weather that will keep you safe and healthy
- Wear layers but don’t bundle up too warm
- Use synthetic fabrics that are made to wick away moisture then layer with fleece or wool for warmth
- Hydrate before and during your exercise. You still need water even though you may not be sweating
- Wear sturdy shoes for safety sake and made for the weather
- Add waterproof gear if it is raining, snowing or sleeting so as to not get too cold
- Make sure to warm up by jogging in place or doing jumping jacks for 3-5 minutes
- Cool down with light stretches to relieve tight muscles
- Listen to your body! Don’t push it in cold weather and don’t over do it
- Cover your face, neck, and hands with is vulnerable to frostbite
- Protect your skin with sunscreen and lip balms. Reflection from the snow is hard on your skin
- Watch your wind chill factor. That is the dangerous part about winter. Stay inside if the wind chill is too much
- Watch for frostbite which starts with numbness of the skin. Do not rub your cold skin, just warm it with blankets or warm bath
You can enjoy a nice run or walk or any exercise you love in the winter weather. Just be smart and safe to make sure you can get the most out of your effort while still enjoying the amazing fresh air.
