Sometimes you just know that a book is going to get you right in the gut. This is the first book that I have read and reviewed by this author and when I read the synopsis I knew she would become an author that I would gravitate to. In fact, I went and got one of her other books already.
This author has a nice list of other books stacking up. I need to get busy and read some of her past ones if this book is anything like her others! I loved this story and I think you will too. Read my review below.

The Scars I Bare by J.L.Berg

Every scar tells a story…
Some are etched on the skin, for the whole world to see.
Others are buried deep, so deep, only the heart can truly find them.
Dean Sutherland was the quintessential guy next door. Strong and dependable, with a heart of gold, he knew exactly where his life was headed. Until one fateful night at sea ripped away everything. Now he’s adrift, a man without a purpose.
Cora Carpenter thought she had the perfect life. A successful career, an affectionate husband and a daughter who adores her. But soon that perfect world is crashing down around her, and she’s in need of a fresh start. Moving to a remote town on the coast of North Carolina seems like the perfect plan. That is, until she finds herself face to face with a kindred soul from her past.
Dean and Cora have more in common than either are willing to admit. Both deeply rooted in their pain, they can’t help but find hope in each other’s eyes and passion entwined with every touch. But can two broken hearts make a whole?
Will the scars they’ve bared to one another poison their happily ever after, or can love truly heal all?
My Review of The Scars I Bare by J.L.Berg
The Scars I Bare is heartbreaking in many ways and touching in many other ways.
To say that I could identify with the main character, Dean, is an understatement. My husband went through the exact same thing (different body part). However, the author nailed so many of the emotional aspects of this injury. The anxiety, the mood swings. The emotional feelings of losing their worth and their belief in their manhood was depicted so well.
I could identify perfectly with the way Dean felt lost without direction. His connection to Cora was deep and heartfelt. The author crafted the story with the beautiful depth of emotion and tied these two characters together well.
The story has a lot of emotions tied to it. From her need to gain footing after a divorce to his need to take care of her and have that family connection, you end up with the major feels; both happy and sad.
The Scars I Bare is a wonderful introduction to this author for me. I am looking forward to reading many more of her books. She captured my attention with this book that showcases her understanding to the ups and downs of a true, sweet romance and how to write a touching and sexy novel.
