The Housemaid by Freida McFadden cover

This book kept landing in my inbox and I did not agree to review it until the third or fourth request. I had my to-be-reviewed list pared down and was focusing on a particular genre. But then, I cracked and agreed to review it.

This story is certainly different and one that makes you wonder what goes through the author’s mind as they are conjuring up the most wicked things… Check out my thoughts and full review below for this new release.

OVERVIEW:
Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.

I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.

I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late.

But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.

They don’t know what I’m capable of…

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden Review

I have to say the cover is compelling on its own. It is begging you to see what is on the other side of that keyhole and it is a good depiction of the secrets behind the Winchesters’ doors.

This story captured my attention in many ways. The plot is definitely twisted so do not expect to get through this book without knowing that you will be witness to some horrific and vivid crimes, both physically and psychologically.

Regardless of that, the story is one that begs you to keep reading, just to see what else could happen. The character development is detailed and the plot is written where some subtlety rules but on the other hand intense scenes reign. With each turn of the page, you are treated to scenes that make you wonder what else could happen.

The book is written in three parts and while the first part seems a bit slow to start, it soon ramps up and the trippy turns take center stage.

This is my first book by McFadden. Definitely different with a plot that leaves you shaking your head. Unique and a bit disturbing!
