Several years ago I happened upon a book that I absolutely fell in love with called Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. This book made a deep impression on me because it took the story of relatively unimportant women in the Bible and introduced us to how our focus in life needs to be on learning and caring for others instead of all the other minutia that floats around in our existence.
Using the women of the Bible to tell us and show us how we need to be living our life and even in terms of how we work and make money is an interesting way to look into ourselves to focus and change for the better. It brings us back to center where we need to be effective in our busy lives.
I was asked to review this new upcoming release Successful Women of the Bible by Katara Washington Patton and I was very interested in her take on successful women from the Bible and how they impact our faith, relationships, and even our job. Here are my thoughts.

ISBN-13: 978-1455538850
The second book in a new series that brings the experiences of favorite Bible characters to challenges of contemporary life.
Contemporary “success” is often defined in financial terms or by number of Twitter followers. But for women of faith, success is so much more. And it turns out the timeless qualities of success are exemplified by women on the pages of their favorite book, the Bible.
Deborah’s model leadership is just as relevant today as it was in the age of the Hebrew judges. Esther’s courage to stand up for a cause, Miriam’s joyful support of others, Priscilla’s exemplary partnership skill, Lydia’s business acumen, and other characteristics of women in the Bible are embodied in lively storytelling. Busy Christian women–often working and raising a family–crave examples of success. Here are distilled principles they can use to succeed in today’s noisy culture. The lessons of these icons of the faith apply, even in the age of Facebook and Instagram.
My Thoughts on Successful Women of the Bible by Katara Washington Patton
There are many influential women in the Bible, such as the two I previously mentioned, Martha and Mary, and in this new release, the author chooses women in the Bible where they appeared to have had a small amount of influence upon us as we read the passage, however, looking at them in depth, we can see where they can actually have a greater impact throughout our lives.
Not only are Martha and Mary included in this book but others as well. For instance, Esther. The author tells us that Esther can influence successful women to stand up for a cause. She shares the Bible verse in which she is teaching us this lesson and then she explains how this verse correlates to her conclusion.
Patton uses many women to correlate how they can impact the success in our life. For instance, Priscilla shows us that successful women can be secure partners with men. Mary Magdalene, who is in a very well-known person in the Bible, shows us that successful women live redeemed lives no matter what our past was.
These are just a few examples of the many women that the author shares with us. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Lydia. The author shares with us a passage in ACTS where she talks about Lydia and uses her to show us how successful women can handle their business. It is a pertinent message for me. She says:
“Women have influence”. “Successful women have lots of influence. Successful woman of faith hold influence that can shape the world and change lives”.
I love the message offered in this wonderful book. It is a multiple use book that is written like a self-help book but offers plenty of thought and wisdom that we can take into our lives where we can make an impact with a change to our life, our business or family.
This is a great book for women of faith of all ages. What a great gift idea for a new graduate or someone who has gotten a new job.
