With cosmetics it is very important to keep them fresh for looks and performance on your ace. Many cosmetics can harbor bacteria that can transfer to your face and eyes and can cause breaks outs or rashes. It is best to follow these suggestions for freshness of your cosmetics. If any of your makeup has a rancid smell, throw it away immediately. If you don’t know how old it is, dump it, especially mascara!

Creams like moisturizers – 1 year
Gel based cleansers or treatments – 1 year.
Pencil eye liner – sharpen regularly – up to 3 years.
Lip liner – If wooden, sharpen regularly and then up to 3 years.
Eyeshadow – up to 3 years.
Foundation – A water-based – up to 12 months,
Foundation – oil-based – up to 18 months.
Lipstick – 1-2 years max
Mascara – 3- 4 months.
Nail Polish – up to 12 months
Brushes – Wash every 2-3 months in a mild detergent.
Sponges – Wash weekly and discard monthly.
The easiest way to keep track of the age of your makeup is to take a sharpie and write the date of purchase on the label when you take it out of the package. This way you will ensure that only top quality products are going on your face.
