A Time of Torment by John Connolly

I read a lot of different genres. While it may seem that I read the same types over and over here on the blog, in reality I cross many areas. I am an avid reader and within that my interests are large. I was offered the chance to review a brand-new release by a master storyteller, John Connolly. This suspenseful thriller was one that really challenged me in many ways. Here are my thoughts on this new book.

A Time of Torment by John Connolly | book review by A Midlife Wife

A Time of Torment by John Connolly
Series: Charlie Parker (Book 14)
Publisher: Atria/Emily Bestler Books (August 2, 2016)
ISBN-13: 978-1501118326

Dangerous and driven private investigator Charlie Parker returns in the latest gripping thriller of internationally bestselling author John Connolly’s series, in which ungodly fears haunt a strange and isolated community.

Jerome Burnel was once a hero. He intervened to prevent multiple killings, and in doing so destroyed himself. His life was torn apart. He was imprisoned, brutalized.

But in his final days, with the hunters circling, he tells his story to private detective Charlie Parker. He speaks of the girl who was marked for death, but was saved; of the ones who tormented him, and an entity that hides in a ruined stockade.

Parker is not like other men. He died, and was reborn. He is ready to wage war.

Now he will descend upon a strange, isolated community called the Cut, and face down a force of men who rule by terror, intimidation, and murder.

All in the name of the being they serve. All in the name of the Dead King.

Thoughts about A Time of Torment John Connolly

I can usually go into a suspenseful thriller relatively easy. However this one immediately takes your breath away from the very beginning. I found myself very hesitant to read the book because of the graphic nature and depiction of some seriously twisted people.

However, I kept turning the pages and I found myself getting more and more involved and sucked in to the story. The author is a master at creating situations that allows you to think you know what’s going on when in reality it’s something else completely different.

I have to admit the story took me a while to read. That’s very rare for me. I usually read a book from start to finish and don’t normally read several at a time. However, I found that I needed to do that with this book because it was a very intense read in many ways. But when I was reading it, it was all consuming and I just didn’t want to stop. Dealing with the depth of grit, crime and impossible situations was emotional, exhausting at times, and completely gripping.

While reading A Time of Torment you find yourself wanting to skip ahead to find out what’s going on. Grasping for any explanation and details about where the story is going. That to me tells me that the author has that magic touch, that ability to grab the readers attention and never let go.

I can see why this book is a bestseller. Be warned about the depth of emotion, both good and bad, that will come from this book. Know that this is a read that will consume you and leave you thinking about it long after you finished and leave you craving the next one from this very talented author.
