Last year I was invited to review a first book called The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy Reichert. It was a great introduction to this new authors work of contemporary women’s fiction. This month she has released a new addition to her repertoire and I was excited to check out and review it. Here is:
Luck, Love & Lemon Pie by Amy E. Reichert
Publisher: Gallery Books
ISBN 9781501121548
July 2016
When Milwaukee-area wife and mother MJ Boudreaux notices her husband Chris seems more interested in the casino than her, she’s more bothered that she isn’t upset than by her husband’s absence. She picks up poker as a way for them to spend more time together—and reignite their marital flame.
Although the game doesn’t give her the quality time with Chris that she’d hoped, MJ finds she has a knack for it. Increasingly unhappy at home, she turns to the felt top of the poker table for comfort. Intoxicated with newfound freedom, MJ begins spending more time at the gambling tables and less with her family, finally carving out for herself a place outside her role of wife and mother.
After a string of great wins, MJ finds herself in Vegas, attracting the attention of a certain magnetic poker star. But when she’s forced to choose between her family and her new exciting lifestyle, the stakes may be higher than she thought and MJ will have to play her hand carefully…or risk losing it all.
My Thoughts on Luck, Love & Lemon Pie by Amy E. Reichert
You get a sense of who an author is when you’re reading their books. This author is strong in the chick lit genre and this book is also supportive of that fact.
We step into the life of MJ and Chris who have been married for over 20 years and have fallen into that trap of boring existence and not taking care of each other in the manner that they should. Nothing in common anymore, working overtime, putting the kids first, and basic existence plague this couple.
The author hits the nail on the head when describing this marriage. It looks like many marriages I’ve seen, including my own. So I could relate very well to MJ trying to find a way to spend time with her husband. The author takes a bit of a different route with MJ as she finds herself engrossed in the hobby that was supposed to bring them together. She then takes it to another level and starts neglecting her own family.
As you’re reading the story I found myself reflecting on my own marriage and correlating with the authors writing. I’m sure it’s not a popular position that MJ took things a bit too far, but I can also relate to why she did that too.
Thankfully, it wasn’t all a loss and we are treated to a heartfelt HEA. While not intense or overly dramatic, this book does reflect what a marriage can look like after it’s been ignored for a bit.
This book is a delightful reminder of the fact we need to learn to take care of our spouse as much as we take care of the kids, work, housekeeping, and other items that seem to get on the list first.
A wonderful book that speaks to the heart of marriage and the importance of working together to make it stronger every day. Amy has a lovely talent in being able to tell a story women can relate to. A lovely summer read…. And make sure to check out the recipe at the end! Yum
