The Ferryman's Daughter by Yasmin Angoe: Review

I absolutely love it when a story catches you off guard. You think it’s going to be just another murder mystery or crime spree story, then the author takes the twists and throws you into something completely different.

I’m in awe of authors that can develop a concept and do a really good job engaging the reader. Check out my thoughts on this murder mystery below.

Imagine yourself as this child of a murderer. Then imagine yourself trying to hide that throughout your adult life.

All of a sudden, cracks start to appear, and someone knows your secret. That’s the premise for this story.

I love the concept and the way the author tells her story. It’s unique and an interesting take on a serial killer predator that develops throughout the book.

The story is truly engaging, and the writer develops the characters in interesting detail. However, something is missing. In between the rich, graphic descriptions, the author kind of missed telling us the why.

Why is this main character being targeted? Why are there attacks coming in from multiple places and multiple people? Who are they, and what are they hiding?

I get it for the murderer’s character. But there are other intentional attacks on the main character that are glossed over.

Also, when you look at the relationship between the main character and her fiancé, I think there could’ve been so much more depth built in if they had true communication. Protecting your loved one is one thing, but trust is another. Adding that piece would’ve really helped connect the reader to the main characters.

The Ferrymen’s Daughter plot is a solid suspense thriller. The story is unique, raw, and engaging. Angoe loaded up the internal twists and did not disappoint in that area. You did not want to put it down the further you got into the story. It is an imaginative, twisted story.

The author also did a great job with the surface-level checkmarks needed in this suspense thriller. But the lack of a deeper, even psychological connection between some of the characters and the reader is what would make this a 5-star read. The ending though-so fitting!
