Denim and Dust by Harper Dale: Review

I needed a good cowboy Romance in my life, so I was excited to see this book when I learned about CampNetGalley this summer.

I have never heard of this author or have read her before, but I had high hopes. Check out my thoughts on this second-chance, Texas-style romance below.

I remember him bulldogging with the sun setting behind him, thinking I’d never seen anything so breathtaking. Not the sky. Him.

Raising his arms into the air with the steer down, his eyes searched for me in the stands, flashing that deep-dimpled grin when he saw me watching. But we were kids. What do kids know?

I clear my throat, shift in my seat, and try to focus on the road as the stars come out, but all I can think is how long it’s been since I let myself remember him like this. Calder Boone. The boy I left. The man I’m sure to run into in a town of a few thousand.

The land, the sky, and the sunset were exactly the same back then. But I’m not.

When Laurel Prescott lands back in Ladera, Texas, she finds a very different Calder Boone than the boy she left behind. A man forged in fire and carrying scars he doesn’t let anyone see. One thing hasn’t changed, though.

Denim and Dust by Harper Dale Review

Coming back home after several years opens up a big avenue for big feelings, especially surrounding the one you never got over.

Our main characters are full of feelings. Laurel has a son whose name ties all three of them together. As we tiptoe through those hurt feelings and “what ifs “, it is clear that her impending divorce was never going to be a question. Calder is tender-hearted because he never stopped loving her.

The author added secondary characters that were just as strong as our main characters. Her parents, especially her dad’s change around his grandson, was impressive. Her best friend and Calder’s best friend have a sparking relationship that hopefully turns into a new story. And even though I’m not a huge fan of children characters in books, this kid was the levity the story needed in spots.

The second chance trope is typical with the back-and-forth, but their connection together was heartfelt and believable. Heat factor is loaded, medium, and it was not overdone, making it a natural part of the story.

I did see a few errors with this arc and a few places that could have been developed more, like the Ex’s bad behavior, but the story itself captured my attention. I would definitely read her stories again.
