For some, like those who have diabetes or are obese, changing your diet to very low carb can give the pancreas a rest from having to process sugar in the diet, including the sugar that’s present in fibrous vegetables and fruits.
My current eating plan is based on the keto diet but instead of it being the “dirty keto”, which includes processed meats and fats, the RBS (Ridiculously Big Salad) – Eat Like a Bear plan is based on healthy salads as a base along with fats, proteins, and all of the nutritious goodness you can get.
Is A Keto Diet Right for You? Fast Facts to Help You Decide
In diets such as the ketogenic or low carb diet, the body learns to process fat, rather than sugar or carbohydrates, as its chosen energy source.
This can result in the following changes:
• Dramatic weight loss
• Increase in energy levels
• Reduction of belly fat and fat around the organs
• A needed rest for the pancreas
• Healthier digestion
• Reduction of yeast in the body
• Reduced sugar cravings
Your success on a ketogenic or low-carb diet depends on a variety of factors. This diet can be difficult for people to follow because a strict limiting of carbs must be followed to the tee, with a higher percentage of fats in the diet than you may be used to eating. The goal is to keep the liver in a state of ketosis, which means your liver is spilling ketone bodies for you to use as fuel for energy.
Drawbacks of the keto diet include:
** “Keto flu” which occurs during the first week or so as the body adjusts to this new way of eating and goes through sugar withdrawal, including yeast die-off which can result in flu-like symptoms.
** Slower digestion. Plant fiber in the diet passes protein along through the digestive tract and helps you to stay regular with bowel movements. Medical experts who recommend the keto diet to their obesity and diabetic patients strongly recommend a high daily intake of green, leafy fibrous vegetables to compensate for the lack of carbs that happens when we avoid eating grain-based and plant-based carbs.
** Not everyone can hack the increase in fat in their diet. Some may experience digestive issues or simply not feel right while eating low-carb. It’s best to do a thorough amount of research before embarking on a low-carb or any strict diet plan.
If you have medical concerns of any kind, you may want to run your idea by your medical doctor before starting this type of extreme diet.
