Sometimes it’s hard to pick a destination when you want to take a trip. We always think about the popular destinations in big cities. But if you’re working on a budget sometimes popular destinations are also the most expensive.
Inflated prices often show at the height of tourist season as businesses and touristy locales know they can charge more to make up for the off-season.
These actions can be seen in hotel choices too. If you select a hotel that is right in the center of all of the activities, you are going to pay more. If you’re okay with a short commute to the activities or a longer walk, look for more affordable accommodations on the outskirts of your location and target destination.
I’m not saying that visiting larger cities is always going to be expensive. There are plenty of free and budget minded activities that you can do and still explore the city and surrounding areas.
Here’s a few ideas that will perhaps spark your next low-cost trip.
Low Cost or Free Activities for Your Next Trip
State and National Parks
There are so many parks throughout the US. Some, of course, are more popular than others. Some have better accommodations than others but they are all a low-cost or free option.
City Parks and Street Fairs
Most larger cities have beautiful parks to explore that may even include historical monuments. You will also find daily or weekend activities. Street fairs, farmers market‘s, art walks, antique fairs, and similar events are a fun way to spend an afternoon or morning. Plus, they are usually always free.
Beaches and Boardwalks
If it’s warm outside, there’s nothing like spending the day at the beach. Exploring, relaxing, surfing, whatever activity you enjoy is different at every location. Don’t forget the great boardwalk experiences that are available too.
Historic Locations
There are many locations that are a historic destination for one reason or another. One of the greatest places we strayed while driving through Montana was The Battle of the Little Big Horn State Park. It was free and so very interesting. There are plenty of historic things to see, even in a city.
Cultural Centers in the City
Many larger cities have sections that have become a cultural center such as Japantown in San Francisco or Chinatown in many cities. Little Italy can be found in many destinations like New York, San Diego, San Francisco, etc. Often within these cultural centers you will find festivals and tourist interests, not to mention great food.
Walking Tours
Walking tours are a great way to enjoy the city. You can pick up maps at your hotel or just strap on your walking shoes to enjoy the sights and the flavor of the town.
Heading to a much anticipated destination doesn’t have to be expensive. There are so many free and low-cost ways to visit a city. Even driving through to see the colors changing on the trees can be so worth it. Just get out there and have fun.
